Product Review: Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter

The internet has been ablaze with cookie butter chatter since it came out a few months ago. (I read up on TJ’s cookie butter and learned that it actually came out around the holidays last year but they couldn’t keep up with the demand for it.) I couldn’t escape from the buzz so I finally bought myself a jar.

Even before opening it my first question was what the heck is speculoos? Well apparently speculoos is a Dutch holiday biscuit. Cookie butter is a spreadable version of the famous biscuit. Basically it’s cookies ground up with butter, hence cookie butter.

The texture surprised me. I expected cookie butter to be creamy like peanut butter, as it is very similar in every other way, but it was harder and much thicker.

The smell is delicious with hints of cinnamon, graham, molasses, and gingerbread. The taste is exactly that too. It tastes like a yummy holiday spiced cookie but buttery and creamy. The texture is also nice because it has little crumbs of cookie throughout that create the perfect subtle crunch. Cookie butter is thick though and you can almost chew it.

The sweetness of cookie butter make me want to pair it with something savory. I totally get why the jar suggests you eat it with pretzels or waffles.

There is nothing nutritionally significant about cookie butter so it’s really just a guilty pleasure treat. I was surprised though at the sugar content – it was much lower than I’d expected.

The verdict: I like the cookie flavor of cookie butter, it’s comforting and familiar. The texture is nice too. However after eating it I felt like the inside of my mouth was coated with oil or wax or something. Not pleasant. Still, this stuff is strangely addictive and I could probably eat the whole jar in a weekend. I want to buy another jar but probably shouldn’t.
